The Presidency of the Turkish General Staff (TSK) harshly condemned the armed assault resulting in the death of Sergeant Nejdet Aydoğdu (24), as “bloodthirsty, vulgar and dastardly.”

Officer Aydoğdu was severely injured by the shooting on Sunday and later died of his wound. The body of the deceased sergeant was sent to his home Ordu, a city in the Black Sea region, after a military ceremony on Thursday. Aydoğdu's wife and family, alongside Chief of the Air Staff General Akın Öztürk, 2nd Army Commander General Adem Huduti, Justice and Development Party Diyarbakır MP Süleyman Hamzaoğulları among other dignitaries attended the ceremony held at Diyarbakır 2nd Tactical Air Force Command Base.

A statement on the Turkish Army, website yesterday said, “on 29 October 2014 around 16.50 hours, Air Sergeant Nejdet Aydoğdu was shot in the head at close range by two masked and yet to be identified men, whilst shopping with his family at Diyarbakır's central Bağlar district Körhat neighbourhood.”

The statement went on to condemn the attack as bloodthirsty, vulgar and dastardly, sending out condolences to the victim's family and the whole of the Turkish General Staff.

Opposition inquires about autonomy in southeast province

Nationalist Movement Party MP Özcan Yeniçeri gives parliamentary question to be replied in writing by the Minister of Interior regarding the shooting of one Turkish soldier and two special sergeants, on Saturday by unidentified masked men linked to the PKK. Yeniçeri also inquired about the declaration of autonomy in Cizre, a district of the south-eastern province of Şırnak, by members of PKK offshoot, Patriot Revolutionary Youth Movement (YDG-H).

Özcan Yeniçeri, a National Movement Party (MHP) deputy, forwarded the following questions:

Do the allegations in the media regarding the ‘culprits have been found' announcement concerning the armed assault on three soldiers which ended in their deaths, during weekly leave in the Yüksekova district of Hakkâri reflect the truth?

Do allegations stating the ‘culprits' were involved in previous incidents reflect the truth? If so, who is responsible of this act which deceives the public? Which procedures have been taken regarding these people?

Do the allegations that the 10 or so addresses raided to find the assailants responsible for the armed assault on three soldiers which took place during their weekly leave, were understood to be wrong during the raids reflect the truth?

In another parliamentary question Yeniçeri, asked if allegations that PKK's supposed public order branch, known as the Patriot Revolutionary Youth Movement (YDG-H) have declared autonomy in Cizre; if large groups of masked militants, especially at nights, have been marching in military style in the Sur and Nur neighoburhoods since the 25th and 26th of October reflected the truth.

Cizre is a district of the Şırnak province in south-eastern Turkey where members of the Kurdistan Workers Party the PKK, which is considered a terrorist organisation by the United States, the European Union and Turkey, have been recently inciting unrest and disorder.

Yeniçeri's question goes son to ask if allegations that the militants in uniform and YDG-H t-shirts were saying “We have cleaned our streets of all of the State's dirty politics. The neighbourhoods will from now on govern themselves” and that security forces would no longer be allowed into those neighbourhoods and if those attending the ceremony would wave PKK and KCK flags whilst chanting “Biji Serok Apo” slogans reflect the truth.

After the death of the three soldiers in the Yüksekova district of Hakkâri, another southeastern province, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu said the assailants had been apprehended, whilst the TSK gave a contradicting statement saying the search for the assailants was on-going. News in the Turkish media also contradicted statements by officials.

[Ara Başlık] Turkish Press Council condemns media ban
The Turkish Press Council harshly condemned the extension of a media ban by the Yüksekova Criminal Court of Peace, regarding the armed assault of three Turkish soldiers last week. Stating that censorship and discrimination in media is an unchangeable fact of Turkey, the Press Council said that it condemned the inhibition of the freedom of information and the media ban.
