Tunisia's army chief of staff Gen. Mohamed Salah Hamdi has resigned, the Defense Ministry said Wednesday.
"The Ministry of Defense clarifies that the chief of staff of the army submitted his resignation on July 23, 2014, for personal reasons, and we have accepted it," the ministry said in a statement.
Hamdi's deputy Mohsen al-Farsi will lead the army until a new chief of staff is appointed, ministry spokesman Rachid Bouhoula told Anadolu Agency.
The resignation comes amid criticism to the army's response to recent militant attacks in the mountainous areas on Tunisia's border with Algeria.
