Tunisia's Envoy To Work From Libya's Tripoli: Source

28.02.2015 20:48

Tunisia's new ambassador to Libya arrived on Saturday in capital Tripoli to start his mission in the country, a diplomatic source from Libya's Tripoli based government has said.

Tunisia's new ambassador to Libya arrived on Saturday in capital Tripoli to start his mission in the country, a diplomatic source from Libya's Tripoli-based government has said.

Nevertheless, the source declined to mention the name of the new ambassador, saying he had to withhold the name for security considerations.

Tunisia had pulled its diplomatic mission out of Libya in October of 2014 due to the country's deteriorating security conditions. Other foreign diplomatic missions also had to leave the country, which has been in turmoil since 2011.

Tunisian authorities could not be reached for immediate comment on the Libyan diplomatic source's assertion.

On Sunday, Tunisia's Foreign Minister Taieb Baccouche said his country supported efforts made by the United Nations to form a unity government in Libya.

Libya has remained in a state of turmoil since a bloody uprising ended the decades-long rule of autocratic leader Muammar Gaddafi in late 2011.

Since then, the country's sharp political divisions have yielded two rival seats of government, each of which has its own institutions.

Vying for legislative authority are the Tobruk-based House of Representatives and the Islamist-led General National Congress, which – even though its mandate ended last year – continues to convene in capital Tripoli.

The two assemblies support two different governments, respectively headquartered in the two cities.
