Turkcell Denies Receiving Gov't Order To Cut Internet In Taksim

03.06.2013 18:10

Turkey's largest GSM operator Turkcell has denied claims being spread on social media sites that it had cut Internet connection in Taksim Square over the weekend, where large protests have been taking place against the government's policies.

Turkey's largest GSM operator Turkcell has denied claims being spread on social media sites that it had cut Internet connection in Taksim Square over the weekend, where large protests have been taking place against the government's policies.

In the last few days protests have taken place in İstanbul as well as in other provinces sparked by the police response to peaceful demonstrations against the government's plans to redevelop İstanbul's Taksim Square.

On their official Twitter account, Turkcell denied the reports, stating "Turkcell has NOT received any request to block mobile communications in any part of Turkey and our technical teams are working to provide uninterrupted communications services as always."

In addition, the company said that it has established additional base stations to provide uninterrupted service -- a claim which was also supported by individual commenters on Twitter -- for the masses of people who have been trying to connect to the Internet, at the same time asking people to follow Turkcell's official Twitter account for updates.
