May 19, Atatürk Commemoration and Youth and Sports Day, has been marked throughout Turkey.
The first official ceremony took place in the Republic Monument in İstanbul's Taksim Square on Sunday. Along with students, representatives of some political parties and civil society organizations have attended the program. The celebration began after a wreath laid in front of the monument and continued with the crowd sang the Turkish national anthem and stood homage.
Some participants, mostly the members of the Republican People's Party (CHP), have criticized the new regulation that the celebrations became more civilian, replaced by official ceremonies in the stadiums and military parades. After the official ceremony ended, they also laid another wreath.
