Turkey Condemns Attack On Un Base İn South Sudan

19.04.2014 13:47

Foreign ministry condemns Thursday attack carried out by an armed mob on a U.N. base sheltering internally displaced persons.

Turkey condemned on Saturday an armed attack on a U.N.-compound in South Sudan which left at least four people dead.

In a statement issued on its website, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs underscored the signing of a ceasefire agreement between the South Sudanese government and rebel forces in January and reiterated its support for 'brother' South Sudan government and its people.

"We extend our condolences to the families of the victims and wish for a quick recovery for the wounded," the statement said.

At least four people were killed Thursday and dozens more injured in an attack carried out by an armed mob on a U.N. base sheltering internally displaced persons in Bor, provincial capital of Jonglei State.

The world's youngest state, South Sudan has been wracked by violent infighting since mid-December 2013 when President Salva Kiir accused Machar of standing behind a failed coup attempt against his regime.

The violence has left thousands dead and forced around a million people to flee their homes, according to the U.N.

The U.N. mission in South Sudan hosts around 5,000 internally displaced people in its compounds.
