The Turkish Red Crescent Society delivered emergency aid and humanitarian supplies Monday the small northern Turkmen-majority town of Amirli, in Iraq, according to an official at the Turkish Red Crescent's office in Iraq.
The Red Crescent aid trucks had not been previously able to gain access to the town of Amirli because it was besieged by Islamic State forces.
But on Monday, Iraqi government forces, supported by Kurdish peshmerga and Shiite militias, gained control of Suleiman Beg near Amirli, allowing for the humanitarian supplies to be distributed to suffering families, said Turkey's Red Crescent Iraqi officer, Umit Turkarslan.
"I would like to thank the Turkish state and charitable Turkish people," said Iraqi Turkmen Front Chairman Haytham Muhtaroglu.
The town of Amirli has a population of 30,000, comprised mainly of Turkmen. It had been surrounded by the militants from the self-proclaimed Islamic State for two months.
IS fighters, which already have control of parts of Syria, captured the northern Iraqi city of Mosul in June and then surged across the north, taking control of a number of predominantly Sunni cities.
