Turkey Holds Additional Gallipoli Commemorations

Additional commemorations of the Battle of Gallipoli are to be held next week to accommodate the thousands of Australians and New Zealanders who could not attend April's ceremonies, a local official said on Thursday.



More than 43,000 Australians and New Zealanders applied to attend April's commemorations to mark the 1915 campaign but just 10,000 places were available.



Canakkale Governor Ahmet Cinar told Anadolu Agency that up to 5,000 other visitors would be able to attend the additional events - an Australian service on Aug. 6 at Lone Pine Cemetery and a ceremony for New Zealanders at the Chunuk Bair Memorial on Aug. 8.



The dates mark the Australian and New Zealand Army Corps' role in the last major Allied attempt to break out of the Canakkale beachheads. - Ankara
