The Turkish Foreign Ministry has warned its citizens not to travel to Burkina Faso, where the security situation in its capital, Vagadugu, has deteriorated and remains unpredictable following protests.
A statement released by the Turkish Foreign Ministry on Friday recommended that Turkish citizens leave Burkina Faso as soon as possible, or take precautions for their safety.
For several weeks, Burkina Faso's 63-year-old President, Blaise Compaore, had attempted to remain in power – after 27 years at the helm.
This drew angry reactions from the opposition, civil society and many young people.
More than 60 percent of Burkina Faso's roughly 17 million-strong population is under 25 years old and has never known a president other than Compaore, who has recently resigned after the protests.
Turkey's Foreign Ministry also said Turkish citizens may apply to the embassy in Vagadugu and follow the instructions given by embassy officials.
