Turkey and Japan -- two countries that both suffer regular and devastating earthquakes -- are planning to cooperate on disaster management, it was announced Wednesday.
Hosting Japanese Minister of Internal Affairs and Communications Yoshitaka Shindo in Ankara, the Turkish capital, Turkish Deputy Prime Minister Besir Atalay said a protocol will be signed between the two "brother" countries so they can exchange experiences and practices.
Shindo, whose first visit to Turkey was during an earthquake in 1999, said improvements made since then had improved disaster operations. A 7.6 magnitude earthquake shook the town of Izmit, western Turkey, in 1999, causing 17,000 deaths, according to official figures.
Shindo also met Turkish Transport and Communications Minister Lutfi Elvan to sign a protocol bolstering information and communication technology ties.
