There are ceremonies across the country on Wednesday to mark the 91st anniversary of the founding of the Turkish Republic.
The celebrations began with an official ceremony in the Turkish capital, attended by top political leaders and military commanders. The ceremony took place at Anıtkabir, the mausoleum of Mustafa Kemal Atatürk, the founder of the Republic of Turkey. President Recep Tayyip Erdoğan, Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Chief of General Staff Gen. Necdet Özel, Parliament Speaker Cemil Çiçek, president of the Constitutional Court Haşim Kılıç and Republican People's Party (CHP) Chairman Kemal Kılıçdaroğlu were in attendance.
Erdoğan left a wreath at Atatürk's mausoleum. The group then observed a minute of silence, which was followed by the singing of the İstiklal Marşı, the Turkish national anthem.
Republic Day is celebrated in all 81 Turkish provinces as well as in the Turkish Republic of Northern Cyprus (KKTC) and by Turkish missions around the world.
