Turkey has assigned Emrullah İşler, former deputy prime minister and the Justice and Development Party's (AK Party) Ankara deputy, as a special representative of the government to hold meetings with Libyan authorities and convey Turkey's views on ensuring peace and stability in Libya.

The Ministry of Foreign Affairs issued a statement on Monday saying that İşler will pay a visit to Libya to have talks with Libyan authorities between Oct. 20-21. The statement indicated that the meeting will cover matters related to security and peace in Libya.

“In these critical times when there is a pressing need in Libya for political stability and the support of countries friendly to it, this visit [of Emrullah İşler] constitutes an opportunity to underscore that Turkey stands in solidarity with the people of Libya,” the statement read.

Turkey has condemned violence that began targeting civilians in Libya in late August. “We are following the ongoing clashes in Libya with concern, especially in Tripoli and Benghazi. We are saddened by the civilian casualties in the clashes, the destruction of Libya's infrastructure and the emerging humanitarian crisis,” a Foreign Ministry statement explained on Aug. 24.

Libya held general elections in July 2012, but the central government remains weak and state security is unable to maintain law and order since the country was unofficially partitioned into semi-autonomous regions controlled by hundreds of militias, which now stands as the biggest threat to the political process.
