Turkey Protests Death Toll Reaches 36

20.10.2014 13:18

Series of deaths come amid pro Kurdish protests around country.

Another Turkish citizen who was injured during "illegal" pro-Kurdish protests in Bingol's Karliova district died on Monday, bringing the total death toll to 36.

Cengiz Tiryaki passed away after being taken to Malatya Education and Research Hospital for treatment following an attack by a group in the village of Alpiran, located in Bingol's Karliova district on 9th October.

The number of deaths stood at 35 after Ekrem Kacaroğlu who was wounded in demonstrations in Turkey's Izmir province died on Sunday.

The pro-Kurdish protesters took to streets across Turkey under the pretext that the Turkish government was allegedly doing nothing to halt the advance of extremists pouring into the Turkish-Syrian border town Kobani, which has become the scene of fierce street battles between Kurdish groups and ISIL militants.

Scores of vehicles, state buildings, party offices and shops were set on fire and damaged during the violent protests.

Turkish officials have said the country is against supporting PYD fighters in Kobani with military and financial aid, even if Turkey sends troops to take part in fight against ISIL.

The PYD is the Syrian offshoot of the outlawed PKK, which is listed as a terrorist organization by Turkey as well as by the U.S. and the European Union.
