Turkey's Premier Pledges Ongoing Support For Oppressed

02.07.2015 00:03

Ahmet Davutoglu promises 'never to close doors' to refugees.

Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoglu on Wednesday pledged support for refugees.

Speaking at a Ramadan fast-breaking dinner at the Justice and Development (AK) Party headquarters in Ankara, he said: "We will never close the doors to the oppressed who come to us despite all propaganda."

Addressing ambassadors to Turkey, Davutoglu added: "There are 1.7 million refugees in Turkey now but I want to give a striking figure that more than 200,000 refugee babies were born in Turkey. They were born in a free country in peace."

He said responsibility for these infants lay not just with Turkey but with the world.

"I am honored to be the prime minister of a country hosting the highest number of refugees," he added, asking the envoys to pass this on to their own countries.

He accused the international media of ignoring Turkey's humanitarian policy and called for the UN to take "concrete steps against cruelties". - Ankara
