Turkey's Sectoral Confidence İndexes Send Mixed Signals

26.01.2015 11:33

Surveys of businesses in key sectors show relatively sour sentiment.

Business confidence in Turkey's retail trade sector and the construction sector slipped in January although the index of services sector improved, official data revealed on Monday.

Indexes calculated through business surveys by the Turkish Statistical Institute every month evaluate sentiment in key sectors. These indexes range between 0 and 200 points; a rise above 100 indicates optimism.

The confidence index reading for the services sector was 100.4 points in January, up by 2.1 percent from 98.4 points in the previous month.

TurkStat attributed this improvement to improved business sentiment by managers towards the business situation and demand turnover during next three months.

However, the retail trade sector saw the most important decline, slipping 2.7 percent to 104.2 points from 107.2 points in December as managers evaluated current volume of stock above seasonal norms and expected a decrease in business activity-sales in coming months.

Construction sector confidence also slipped by 1 percent in January to 82.4 points from 83.2 points the previous month, indicating that businesses are less confident about the sector's performance over the next three months.
