The Turkish Foreign Ministry said on Friday that the Iraqi government's "negative attitude" towards Turkey's air strikes on Kurdish militant camps in northern Iraq was disappointing and difficult to accept.
"It is obvious that many armed Kurdistan Workers' Party [PKK] militants have been sheltering inside Iraqi territory for years," the Foreign Ministry said in a statement. "It is not possible to accept or understand the opposing attitude of those who can't control their border.”
Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi said on Tuesday that his council of ministers views Turkish airstrikes in Iraq as "a dangerous escalation and a violation of Iraq's sovereignty."
Turkey has been pounding PKK bases located in northern Iraq over the past week.
Turkish air strikes against PKK targets in the Kandil Mountains were always a source of contention and friction between Baghdad and Ankara in the past.

Turkey's fight against PKK self-defense, UN chief says

UN Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon said Turkey is exercising the right of self-defense against the terrorist PKK, after a meeting in New York on Wednesday.
Turkish Prime Minister Ahmet Davtuoğlu informed him about the Turkish position, the UN chief said earlier this week.
"I know that this action taken by Turkey was done in accordance with the UN Charter as a way of exercising self-defense," Ban told reporters after a meeting on Syria. Article 51 of the UN Charter allows member countries to defend themselves against an attack from abroad as part of self-defense.
Along with air strikes against the PKK in northern Iraq, the Turkish Air Forces also targeted positions of the Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) in Syria.
"I was again very much concerned at another loss of a serviceman in Turkey by [the] PKK. I strongly condemn this," the UN chief stated. (Cihan/Today’s Zaman)
