Turkey Sees State Railway Privatization Next Year

23.10.2014 18:06

The Turkish government is preparing to implement a year-old plan to allow private companies to operate in the rail transportation sector starting from 2015, a senior official said on Thursday. Turkey's transportation, maritime affairs and communications minister, Lütfi Elvan, said on Thursday in İstanbul.

The Turkish government is preparing to implement a year-old plan to allow private companies to operate in the rail transportation sector starting from 2015, a senior official said on Thursday.

Turkey's transportation, maritime affairs and communications minister, Lütfi Elvan, said on Thursday in İstanbul that the government plans to open tenders for the privatization of state railway system, a step that would end the long government monopoly on rail freight and passenger transport in Turkey. Land transportation accounts for more than 85 percent of all freight and passenger transport in the country. Elvan said the transition to private railways would be finalized before the end of 2015.

Market observers earlier warned that such a transition would take longer than forecast, since no private company operates in the local rail sector. Opening the tender to experienced foreign operators is an option, sources said.

In March of last year the government submitted a bill to Parliament that would sell off state train operator Turkish State Railways (TCDD) and offer operating licenses to private firms. Government officials separately said that state personnel working on national rail lines would be dismissed with a severance package worth 40 percent of their annual salary.
