Attacks by the Al-Shabaab militant group Sunday resulting in the death of three soldiers and two civilians in a Somalian prison in capital Mogadishu were strongly condemned by Turkey.
A group of Al-Shabaab militants attacked Godka Jili'ow prison in eastern Mogadishu, where several Al-Shabaab detainees were being held.
The militants detonated several explosive-laden cars before attempting to break into the prison amid heavy fighting with the prison guards, according to eyewitnesses.
"The successful thwarting of the attack is a positive side for Somali security forces on their struggle against terrorism," the Turkish Foreign Ministry said late Monday.
The ministry also reiterated its support to activities that promote peace and stability for the state of Somalia and its people.
The battered country appeared to inch closer to stability with the intervention of African Union troops tasked with combating the Al-Shabaab militant group.
Yet, the group still remains active in several parts of the country waging a relentless campaign of attacks against government officials and security sites, which have left hundreds dead.
