Turkey Supports National Unity Government In Libya

24.10.2014 19:42

Turkey insists that its approach to Libya is no different from that of the United Nations, which only recognizes the Abdullah al-Thinni government, but newly appointed special envoy to Libya Emrullah İşler's meeting with Libya's self-declared prime minister, Omar al-Hasi, in al-Hasi's first publicly.

Turkey insists that its approach to Libya is no different from that of the United Nations, which only recognizes the Abdullah al-Thinni government, but newly appointed special envoy to Libya Emrullah İşler's meeting with Libya's self-declared prime minister, Omar al-Hasi, in al-Hasi's first publicly known diplomatic meeting with a foreign representative has puzzled the international community.

Turkish Foreign Ministry sources said on Friday that Turkey supports a more representative, national government in Libya that includes all segments of the society based on dialogue and Turkey is ready to meet both sides in Libya.

According to sources, İşler's meeting with al-Hasi on Oct. 21 helped Turkey to express its position and facilitate a dialogue between the two sides.

When asked why İşler has not met with the al-Thinni government in Bayda when he visited Libya this week, one source told Today's Zaman that, İşler was going to meet with the al-Thinni government, but the flight permits have been issued by the Bayda government a little too late to allow İşler's visit there in a timely manner.

The source, who asked not to be named, said the Bayda government later apologized to Turkish officials for the late flight permits, and added that İşler will be traveling to Libya to meet with the Bayda government in the coming days.

The Foreign Ministry source said Turkey only recognizes the al-Thinni government. According to the source, İşler has conveyed Turkey's messages to al-Hasi, saying that Turkey supports a cease-fire and a dialogue and the establishment of a national unity government which represents all segments of Libyan society.

Turkey's consulate-general in Misrata remains open, as there is no security problem in the area, the source also said.

Noting that Emrullah İşler, former deputy prime minister, can speak Arabic, the source said sending a political name as a special envoy to Libya shows the importance that Turkey attributes to Libya.

The source also stressed that Turkey has been open about its intention to meet both sides from the beginning and the Bayda government knew that İşler was going to meet with al-Hasi.

Al-Hasi's government website showed a picture of the meeting in the prime minister's office between al-Hasi and İşler, a deputy in the Turkish Parliament. The office had been previously used by al-Thinni.

Al-Thinni, the internationally recognized prime minister, was forced to go to the east of the country after Omar al-Hasi formed his own cabinet in the Libyan capital.

Libya has had two governments and parliaments competing for legitimacy since an armed group seized Tripoli in August.

The United Nations and Western countries have tried to bring both sides to the negotiating table to end the country's chaos but have avoided recognizing or dealing publicly with al-Hasi, who was elected by the rival assembly in Tripoli.
