Turkish Court Remands Man Over Israeli Embassy İncident

28.09.2016 23:18

An Ankara court on Wednesday remanded in custody a man involved in a knife incident outside the Israeli embassy in the Turkish capital Ankara last week, judicial sources said.

The suspect -- identified earlier by Ankara Governorship as 38-year-old Konya-born Osman Nuri Caliskan -- confessed during his testimony that he would have cut his own throat with the knife over family issues, according to the sources who spoke on condition of anonymity.

On Sept. 21, Caliskan was intercepted outside the Israeli embassy but was shot in the leg before reaching the building and was subsequently arrested.

Ankara Governorship said in a statement Caliskan had no links with terrorist organizations but his appearance suggested mental illness.

Israeli Foreign Ministry spokesman Emmanuel Nahshon had also confirmed in a statement that the knife-wielding person was shot before reaching the embassy gate. -
