A Turkish movie director was punched in the face following a ceremony in which he made remarks criticizing a deputy prime minister for not "tolerating" his short film.

Director Suat Eroğlu won first place in a short film contest on Wednesday organized by the Confederation of Real Trade Unions (Hak-İş). After the announcement of the winner, Eroğlu's movie was broadcast during the ceremony. Before receiving his award from Prime Minister Ahmet Davutoğlu, Eroğlu said from the podium that although he had listened to the speeches given for two hours, Deputy Prime Minister Bülent Arınç hadn't taken the time to watch his 12-minute film. "Thank you Mr. Bülent," Eroğlu said, sarcastically.

Davutoğlu dismissed Eroğlu's remarks as "unfair" and said he had attended the ceremony as a show of respect even though he had promised his family that he would dine with them at home. Media claimed that Arınç demanded the event's organizers cut the 12-minute film short in order to save time for Davutoğlu.

After Davutoğlu left the ceremony, Eroğlu was punched in the face while he was talking to his friends outside the hall. It was speculated that the man who punched Eroğlu participated in the ceremony and was a member of Hak-İş.
