An MP from Turkey's main opposition party filed an individual appeal to the Constitutional Court on Thursday which claims that President-elect Recep Tayyip Erdogan continuing his role as prime minister is unconstitutional.
Erdogan was elected president on August 10 but will remain as prime minister until August 27 – the day before his inauguration as president. The ruling Justice and Development Party will choose its new chairman, who will become the country's prime minister, during a congress to be chaired by Erdogan on August 27.
Republican People's Party (CHP) lawmaker Atilla Kart lodged an application with the Supreme Court of Appeal to bar Erdogan from chairing the congress. However, the application was denied Wednesday on the grounds that Erdogan can perform the political role until he is sworn in as president on August 28.
Kart said after the announcement of official election results on August 15, confirming Erdogan as president, the prime minister's and ruling party head's seats were automatically vacated.
Kart added his continued presence as prime minister violates the constitution.
