Turkish Police Detains One More Suspect Over Murder Of Serbian Fan

A total of seven suspects are now in custody in the investigation of the fatal stabbing of Marko Ivkovic, a Serbian basketball fan who was killed before a recent Galatasaray Liv Hospital-Red Star Belgrade match in İstanbul, according to media reports.

The Gayrettepe Department of Public Order homicide bureau is continuing to question six previously detained suspects, and the seventh suspect was taken into custody on Wednesday night.

Ivkovic was stabbed on Nov. 21 before a Euroleague Group D basketball match between Galatasaray and Red Star at Abdi İpekçi Stadium.

The news of Ivkovic's death caused a storm on social media, and Red Star fans are planning to come to İstanbul for another match with fans of Greek team Olympiakos on Dec. 18. Tensions were fanned by a priest at Ivkovic's memorial ceremony who stated that the Serbian had become a martyr to the Orthodox faith, adding, "We have a new Milos Obilic," a reference to the Serbian assassin of Ottoman Sultan Murad I.

Following the memorial service for Ivkovic, a protest was held outside the Turkish embassy in Belgrade. Serbian police have taken strict safety measures outside the embassy.

Meanwhile, the Partizan-Banvit match on Wednesday may have eased tensions, as the Serbian team was greeted with flowers at İstanbul's Atatürk Airport, and the Turkish team held up a banner saying "We are sorry for your loss" at the stadium where the match took place.(Cihan/Today's Zaman)
