Two Bugging Device Suspects Arrested After Extradition From Romania

Two former police officers who are suspects in an ongoing case over a bugging device found in then-Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdoğan's office in 2011 were arrested after they were extradited to Turkey from Romania on Sunday.

The arrest ruling was made by the Ankara 7th High Criminal Court.

Former police chief Sedat Zavar and former police officer İlker Usta were brought to İstanbul from Bucharest on Sunday.

The former police officers who were seen handcuffed at İstanbul Atatürk Airport were taken to Haseki Teaching and Research Hospital for a medical screening.

“The show is ongoing,” Zavar told reporters as he was being taken to the hospital.


They were later taken to Bakırköy Courthouse in İstanbul.

The former police officers were detained in Romania in an operation supported by the Turkish National Police Department.

Local Romanian courts had denied the police officers' requests for asylum and ruled for the suspects to be extradited to Turkey on March 20.

Twelve police officers and a senior member of the Scientific and Technological Research Council of Turkey (TÜBİTAK) are standing trial on charges of planting the bugging device found in Erdoğan's office.

The trial began in January in Ankara.
