Two Soldiers Shot Dead On Turkey's Syrian Border Post

22.07.2014 09:48

The attack on southeastern Sanliurfa city kills 2 Turkish soldiers on border duty and injures one. (Updates death toll.)

A soldier who had been critically wounded in an attack on a border post on Turkey's border with Syria has died, bringing the death toll to two.

The Turkish soldier, Berat Sarikaya, died as a result of injuries sustained in the attack, which took place late Monday.

One other injured soldier was transported to Gaziantep University Hospital for treatment.

"The security forces on duty in Doruklu border post in the Ceylanpinar district of southeastern Sanliurfa province were shot at from an unknown location," Sanliurfa Governor Izzettin Kucuk told The Anadolu Agency.

He said the three soldiers wounded in the attack were transferred to district hospital, where one of them died.

The governor said the government is doing everything necessary to determine what happened in the incident and will make a detailed statement later.

Syria has been gripped by almost constant fighting since the regime launched a violent crackdown in response to anti-government protests in March 2011, triggering a conflict that spiraled into civil war.

Now in its fourth year, the conflict in the Middle-East country has begun to present threats far beyond its borders.

The U.N. has stopped updating its death toll for the country after it reached 100,000 in July 2013 due to what it said were difficulties in verifying casualties.

The London-based Syrian Observatory for Human Rights puts the death toll at more than 162,000 people.
