A U.S. citizen, 33, died fighting with the self-proclaimed Islamic State militants in Syria, a U.S. National Security Council official confirmed Tuesday.
Douglas McArthur McCain, a resident of San Diego, California, was killed last weekend by the Free Syrian Army, the American media reported on Tuesday.
"We were aware of the U.S. citizen Douglas McAuthur McCain's presence in Syria and can confirm his death," U.S. National Security Council spokeswoman, Caitlin Hayden said in a statement.
The statement followed that they use every possible preventative measures to stop individuals from traveling abroad for 'jihad' and in keeping an eye on those when they return.
The Islamic State have unilaterally declared a "caliphate" -- rejected by Muslims leaders and scholars -- in the areas they control between Syria and Iraq, driving 1.2 million from their homes and targeting Shiite Muslims, Turkmen, Ezidis and Christians.
