With the country's and the world's attention focused on Ferguson, it is important that the United States demonstrate its continued commitment to fundamental rights and the rule of law, Freedom House president David Kramer issued the statement in response to the violence in Ferguson, Missouri.

"As the investigation into the death of Michael Brown continues, it is critical for all parties involved in this matter to adhere to the principles fundamental to the United States and other democracies," said David J. Kramer, president of Freedom House. "These include the right of peaceful protesters to assemble and express themselves, adherence to non-violence, and the ability of journalists to report on events without intimidation or harassment."

A police officer shot 18-year-old African American teenager Michael Brown in Ferguson Aug. 9. The unrest continued in the city for a few days after the incident. Several people were injured in clashes with police, which used tear gas and rubber bullets to disperse the crowd.
