Uae's Al Nahyan Calls For Arab Defense Framework

26.04.2015 22:18

United Arab Emirates (UAE) Deputy Armed Forces Supreme Commander and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhab Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Sunday called for the presence of a mechanism for Arab security and a collective vision in this regard.

United Arab Emirates (UAE) Deputy Armed Forces Supreme Commander and the Crown Prince of Abu Dhab Prince Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan on Sunday called for the presence of a mechanism for Arab security and a collective vision in this regard.

"Preserving Arab national security cannot be realized without a collective mechanism and vision," Al Nahyan was "ed as saying by the official UAE news agency during a visit to Saudi Arabia's King Fahd air base in the southwestern Saudi city of Taif.

He called for the creation of what he described as a "joint Arab political and military framework."

Sunday's visit was Al Nahyan's second to Saudi Arabia in two weeks amid an ongoing Saudi-led offensive against Yemen's Shiite Houthi group.

The United Arab Emirates is one of several Arab states participating in the Saudi coalition.

Late last month, Saudi Arabia and several other Arab states began striking – from air – Houthi positions across Yemen.

Saudi Arabia says the strikes come in response to appeals by embattled Yemeni President ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi – currently in Riyadh- for help against the Houthis, who overran capital Sanaa late last year and advanced on other provinces.

Yemen has remained in turmoil since 2011 when a popular uprising forced ex-President Ali Abdullah Saleh to step down a year later.
