Uganda Not Ruling Out Shabaab Role İn Prosecutor's Death

31.03.2015 22:03

By Halima Athumani.

Ugandan police have not ruled out a role by the Somali Al-Shabaab militant group and the rebel Allied Democratic Forces (ADF) in the killing of the country's chief prosecutor.

"I'm not ruling in or out the Al-Shabaab or ADF in this organized crime," Police Inspector General Kale Kaihura told reporters on Tuesday.

"I don't want to rush to conclusions, but I would not be surprised because there is this ongoing case. It could even be a combination of all that."

Chief prosecutor Joan Kagezi was shot dead in capital Kampala on Monday.

Kagezi was the lead prosecutor in the trial of 12 people suspected of masterminding terrorist bombings in July 2010 in Kampala, in which 76 people had been killed.

Al-Shabaab militant group had claimed responsibility for these attacks.

"What is clear is that this was a targeted killing. The one who shot Joan intended to kill her and had definitely tracked her," Kaihura said.

The Inspector General said that one of the witnesses described the killer of the chief prosecutor as having worn a sock on his face, slender and light skinned.

"He was definitely a trained Killer," he said.

Last week, the U.S. embassy in Kampala warned of possible attacks in Uganda.

In a statement on Tuesday, the embassy said that Kagezi will be remembered as "a brave and tireless promoter of justice, dedicated to ensuring peace and stability in her country."

It went on to reiterate support for the Ugandan government in its anti-terror efforts.

"We deplore this senseless act of violence and cowardice and join Ugandans in mourning the loss of this heroine in the forefront of the fight against crime and terrorism," it added.
