Ukraine Out Of Money İn Fight Against Rebels

24.07.2014 19:48

Ukraine has no money to finance anti terrorism operations after August 1, says finance minister.

From August 1, Ukraine will be unable to finance its anti-terror operations against pro-Russia separatists in the east of the country, Finance Minister Oleksandr Shlapak said Thursday.

Shlapak said Ukraine would need at least 9 billion Ukrainian Hryvnia ($772,6 million) in order to sustatin the military operations. He said the budget of the operation had been planned presuming that it would end on July 1.

More than 500 people have been killed since pro-Russian separatists in the eastern regions of Ukraine declared intent to break away from Kiev in March.

Shlapak estimated that the Ukraine's financial loss would reach some 13 billion hryvnia at the end of 2014 due to the ongoing crisis.

Ukraine was home to violent street protests begining in November 2013 and leading to the overthrow of former president Viktor Yanukovych after he rejected closer ties with the EU.

Russia annexed the strategic Crimean peninsula after a disputed referendum held on March 16 following the political crisis in Ukraine.
