Ukraine Pres Nominates İncumbent Pm To Form Government

31.10.2014 18:33

President Poroshenko asks his party to support incumbent prime minister.

Ukrainian President Petro Poroshenko has announced that he would assign Prime Minister Arseniy Yatsenyuk to form the new government, as the votes from Sunday's parliamentary elections continue to be counted.

Ukraine's presidency office said on Friday that Poroshenko had asked lawmakers from his political party, the Petro Poroshenko Bloc, to back Yatsenyuk as head of the new government.

According to initial reports, both the president's and the prime minister's parties had acquired around 22 percent of the vote, with Yatsenyuk's People's Front party slightly ahead.

Ukrainians held the parliamentary elections on Sunday in the volatile country and the official results have yet to be released.

Kiev and Moscow reached an agreement Thursday that would guarantee the delivery of Russian gas to Ukraine during the winter even as the two countries remain at odds over eastern Ukraine.

Crimea and most parts of the eastern region of Donbas, which are still not under the full control of Ukrainian authorities, did not participate in the elections.
