Ukraine Protest Against Rebel Regions' Autonomy

17.09.2014 23:02

Members of Ukraine's Right Sector rally to demand President Petro Poroshenko does not to sign a law giving 'special status' to Donetsk and Luhansk.

A group of far-right Ukrainian protesters has called on President Petro Poroshenko to veto the granting of autonomy to the separatist provinces of Donetsk and Luhansk.

Around 100 Right Sector demonstrators demanded Poroshenko not sign a law ratified by the Ukrainian Parliament on Tuesday granting the provinces 'special status.'

During the protest a stun grenade was thrown at riot police, according to an Anadolu Agency correspondent.

The bill gives special status to certain areas of Donetsk and Luhansk for three years and allows for elections in November.

Meanwhile, more than 10 civilians were killed in attacks in the eastern town of Nizhnyaya Krynka on Wednesday.

Ukraine's Anti-Terror Department said in a statement that "terrorists" attacked residential areas and security points with heavy weapons, leaving scores wounded and nine buildings damaged.

Despite a cease-fire between Kiev and pro-Russian separatists signed nearly two weeks ago, minor clashes still take place in Ukraine's eastern regions, with each side blaming the other.
