U.N. Secretary-General Ban Ki-moon, accompanied by World Bank President Jim Yong Kim, arrived in Ethiopian capital Addis Ababa on Monday for a two-day visit to the Horn of Africa nation.
During his visit, the U.N. chief is expected to announce $8 billion in funding assistance for Djibouti, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Kenya, Somalia, South Sudan, Sudan and Uganda.
The visit aims to support economic development, peace and security in the Horn of Africa as part of the partnership between the U.N. and World Bank.
Among those accompanying Ban were the president of the Islamic Development Bank Group and high-level representatives from the African Union Commission, the European Union, the African Development Bank, and the Intergovernmental Authority on Development (IGAD).
Ban and Kim will hold joint meetings in Addis Ababa with Ethiopian Prime Minister Hailemariam Desalegn and ambassadors representing other countries of the Horn of Africa to discuss how the two organizations can promote inclusive growth and shared prosperity in the region.
The two officials are expected to hold a press conference later on Monday.
