Un Envoy Meets Yemen Forces; Meeting Yields No Result

29.01.2015 21:48

A meeting between United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, and representatives of Yemen's political forces has come to an end without results, a presidential source has said.

A meeting between United Nations Special Envoy to Yemen, Jamal Benomar, and representatives of Yemen's political forces has come to an end without results, a presidential source has said.

The source added that the meeting, which started earlier on Thursday, sought to find a solution to Yemen's political crisis, a week after the restive Arab state had a constitutional vacuum induced by the resignation of President ABD Rabbuh Mansour Hadi.

The source, who requested anonymity, told The Anadolu Agency that attending the meeting with the UN special envoy were the representatives of political forces signatory to Yemen's peace and partnership agreement.

"The meeting has, however, produced no results," the presidential source said.

He added that meeting representatives had agreed to hold another meeting on Friday to resume talks on means of putting an end to the current constitutional vacuum.

A group of six Islamist, leftist and nationalist parties had, meanwhile, suggested the formation of a presidential council to run Yemen in case Hadi had not withdrawn his resignation, which he submitted to parliament last Thursday, a political source said.

The source told AA that Yemen's powerful Houthi group backed the idea of forming the presidential council.

Yemen has remained in a state of turmoil since a popular uprising in 2011 ended the autocratic rule of President Ali Abdullah Saleh one year later.

In recent months, the Houthis – who are Shiite Muslims – emerged as a new player on Yemen's political stage, taking over capital Sanaa in September of 2014 and extending its influence to other provinces as well.

The Houthis' growing power, however, has brought it into conflict with local Sunni tribes and Al-Qaeda, the latter of which is said to still be active in fractious Yemen.
