More than 2,500 migrants and refugees have drowned or gone missing while attempting to cross the Mediterranean Sea to date this year, the UN refugee agency UNHCR has said.
Warning of a crisis among irregular migrants, the UNHCR said in a statement on Monday: "Some 130,000 people have arrived in Europe by sea so far this year, more than double the 60,000 recorded in 2013."
Italy received over 118,000 people, who were mostly rescued at sea, the UNHCR said.
The organization said it has been calling for legal, safe alternatives for people fleeing conflict and persecution, so people are not forced to attempt the crossing into Europe by sea.
