Turkey's Chamber of Electrical Engineers (EMO) has applied to the Advertising Council, demanding a halt to the broadcast of a TV commercial promoting a planned nuclear power plant, which is strongly opposed by environmentalists, in the southern town of Akkuyu.

The EMO issued a statement on Friday in which it said that the public is being misinformed and misled with the claim that Turkey will be liberated from foreign dependence in terms of energy through generating nuclear power. The statement highlighted that 100 percent of the shares of Akkuyu Nükleer A.Ş., the company that will run the planned nuclear power plant, belongs to a Russian firm, and that the amount of those shares will never decrease below 51 percent, according to an agreement between Turkey and Russia.

According to EMO, the Akkuyu commercial violates the code on the Protection of Consumers.

The clip has been broadcast by TV networks for some time.
