Two Egyptian policemen were killed and five others injured on Sunday in an explosion that took place meters away from the Foreign Ministry headquarters in downtown Cairo, state television reported.

Two Egyptian policemen were killed and five others injured on Sunday in an explosion that took place meters away from the Foreign Ministry headquarters in downtown Cairo, state television reported.

According to the broadcaster, the bombing hit a checkpoint near the ministry's building, which is also adjacent to the state television's headquarters, leaving a police officer and a conscript dead and five policemen wounded.

Police forces have cordoned off the area and combed it for other explosive devices. Five nearby schools were also evacuated after the bombing.

Assistant Interior Minister Abedl-Fatah Osman told reporters that an initial investigation showed that an explosive device attached to a tree was detonated when security forces reached at the checkpoint site.

No group has claimed responsibility for the incident, the latest in a series of deadly attacks which have mostly targeted security forces since last year's military ouster of president Mohamed Morsi.

Two shadowy militant groups dubbed Ansar Beit al-Maqdis - largely active in the Sinai Peninsula - and Agnad Misr have separately claimed responsibility over some of the attacks.

Former army chief Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi, widely seen as the architect of Morsi's ouster and subsequent imprisonment, was declared the winner of presidential polls conducted in May.
