Update 2 - Gunmen Storm Kenyan Campus, Kill At Least 8

02.04.2015 12:33

Police say gunmen are cornered in one block of the campus.

At least eight people have been killed after masked gunmen stormed a university campus in Garissa town near the Kenya-Somalia border.

"Eight bodies have been admitted to the mortuary so far and we have more than 35 injured, some in critical condition," Arnolda Shiundu, a Kenyan Red Cross official, told The Anadolu Agency by phone.

"We expect to fly at least four of the injured to Nairobi," he said.

Casualties are believed to include two campus guards, two police officers and four civilians.

In a statement, Kenyan police said the attackers had forced their way into Garissa University at around 5.30am, shooting the guards at the university's main gate.

"The attackers then fired indiscriminately while inside the compound," police said.

Police said reinforcements had been called up, noting that the gunmen had been cornered in one block of the university campus.

According to police, some 100 students and teachers have been rescued.

The police statement did not provide an official death toll.

Some of the rescued students spoke of at least five gunmen.

Garissa University College is located about 3km from the town of Garissa and less than 200km from the border with troubled Somalia.

Most public universities in northern Kenya had sent students home following intelligence reports suggesting that Al-Shabaab planned to stage an attack during the Easter holidays.
