Update - 2 Killed During Pro-Morsi Protests İn Cairo

28.11.2014 15:44

Two people were killed Friday when security forces violently dispersed protests staged by supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi in eastern Cairo, a source with Morsi's main support bloc and police said Friday.

Two people were killed Friday when security forces violently dispersed protests staged by supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi in eastern Cairo, a source with Morsi's main support bloc and police said Friday.

"One person was killed while taking part in a demonstration in the Matariya neighborhood," Health Ministry official Khalid al-Khatib told The Anadolu Agency.

A source from the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, Morsi's main support bloc, confirmed the fatality and identified the slain man as pro-Morsi protester Mohamed Hassan.

According to the source, Hassan died of birdshot wounds sustained when security forces dispersed a rally in Matariya.

"Police and military forces used teargas and birdshot to disperse the protest, which led to the death of one protester and the injury of several others," the source said.

But Cairo security chief Ali al-Demerdash said the man had been killed by gunfire from Muslim Brotherhood supporters while leaving a mosque following Friday prayers.

"[The victim] was not participating in the protests," al-Demerdash told AA. "We have nothing to do with his death; we are showing self-restraint in dealing with protesters."

Meanwhile, a security source said that a 40-year-old man, identified as Ahmed Abdel-Aziz, had been killed in clashes between pro-Morsi demonstrators and local residents in the same area.

The fatalities came shortly after two army officers were killed and two soldiers injured in two separate attacks on Friday.

The latest violence comes amid calls by Egypt's Salafist Front – a subcomponent of the pro-Morsi National Alliance – for an "Islamic revolution" on Friday with the stated aim of ending "military rule" and safeguarding "Egypt's Islamic identity."
