Update 2 - Powerful Quake Rocks Central Myanmar, 2 Dead

24.08.2016 16:33

At least two people were killed Wednesday after a magnitude 6.8 earthquake hit central Myanmar, where dozens of pagodas and temples were reportedly damaged in an ancient city.

An official from the ministry of social welfare, relief and resettlement told Anadolu Agency that two people were confirmed dead in the small town of Pakokku in central Magway region.

"As far as we know, two people are dead in Pakokku town in central Myanmar," said the official who asked to remain unnamed as he was not authorized to speak to media.

He added that around 40 pagodas and temples in the ancient Bagan city were believed to have suffered damage due to the earthquake.

"The upper parts of at least four ancient temples collapsed during the quake," he said.

The quake struck 129 miles (208 kilometers) northwest of Mandalay, the country's second largest city, according to the department of meteorology and hydrology.

The tremor was felt across Myanmar, including commercial capital Yangon and other major cities.

The United State Geological Survey recorded the temblor as having an epicenter at a depth of 84 kilometers after 5 p.m. (10.30GMT).

It occurred a day after a magnitude 5 quake hit the Myanmar-India border.

In April, a magnitude 6.9 temblor caused serious damage to three pagodas in the central Sagaing Region, but no casualties. -
