Update 3 - Woman Dies, Attacker Killed İn London 'Terror Attacks'

22.03.2017 21:13

At least one woman was killed and a police officer was critically injured in two separate incidents Wednesday which police are treating as "terror attacks".

The woman died after a car plowed into pedestrians on Westminster Bridge, during which up to 12 people sustained serious injuries.

In a simultaneous incident, a police officer was stabbed in the Old Palace Yard, the courtyard directly outside parliament, by an assailant who was then shot dead by police, according to Commons Leader David Lidington.

The stabbed officer lost his life in the attack, said a BBC report not independently confirmed by Anadolu Agency.

Prime Minister Theresa May was taken to her residence shortly after the incidents, her office said.

Metropolitan police said the incidents led to a number of casualties and asked the public to avoid areas of central London surrounding Parliament Square.

Metropolitan police also said they are treating the incident as a terrorist incident until they know otherwise.

Parliament Square is under a complete security lockdown, with all roads into the square cordoned off by police.

Following the incidents, an emergency high-level security (COBRA) meeting was called.

St Thomas Hospital said some people they are treating from the incidents have "catastrophic injuries" but did not elaborate on the number of casualties. At least three French high school students were among the injured, according to reports.

Met Police Commander BJ Harrington was not able to confirm details of casualties in a short statement he made outside Scotland Yard Headquarters. He appealed for public information and urged the public to stay away from the Westminster area.

In incoming international reaction, U.S. Secretary of State Rex Tillerson condemned the "horrific acts of violence" in a statement, saying "whether they were carried out by troubled individuals or by terrorists, the victims know no difference".

He added, "The American people send their thoughts and prayers to the people of the United Kingdom". -
