30.07.2014 20:03

A female suicide bomber has blown herself up outside a state owned polytechnic in Nigeria's northwestern Kano state, leaving six people dead and as many others wounded, a government run anti terror information agency said Wednesday.

A female suicide bomber has blown herself up outside a state-owned polytechnic in Nigeria's northwestern Kano state, leaving six people dead and as many others wounded, a government-run anti-terror information agency said Wednesday.

"About six persons were killed while about six were injured," Coordinator of the National Information Centre (NIC) Mike Omeri told reporters in Abuja.

According to Omeri, the suicide bomber detonated her explosive device in the school while some students were collecting their "call-up letters for the National Youth Service Corps posting."

Police had earlier said only three were killed, including the bomber herself, while 10 others sustained various injuries.

This is the third attack involving a female suicide bomber to hit Kano in four days.

A female suicide bomber were killed on Sunday in a botched bombing attack near the Northwestern University Kano. A day later, at least four people were killed and eight others injured when a female bomber blew herself up Monday at a state-owned fuel station in the city.

There are fears among Nigerians that the Boko Haram insurgents - the primary suspect - may have brainwashing and coercing dozens of schoolgirls abducted in April to blow themselves up. However, the claim cannot be verified independently.

Omeri, meanwhile, said three were arrested on terror-related charges in the adjacent Katsina state on Tuesday, including a 10-year-old boy identified as Hadiza Musa.

"When they were asked to disembark for security checks, 10-year-old Hadiza was discovered to have been strapped with explosive belt," he said. His companions tried to escape but they were arrested later and the police successfully unstrapped the explosives, Omeri said.

Nigeria has been battling Boko Haram insurgency that has started in its northeastern part five years ago.

Attacks have been reported in other parts of the country, especially in Kaduna and Kano state and the capital city Abuja, where hundreds of people were killed in the past months.
