Update– Angry Sisi Vows 'Tougher Laws' After Prosecutor's Murder

Egyptian President Abdel-Fattah al-Sisi vowed to implement tougher laws on Tuesday, one day after the killing of the country's prosecutor-general in a deadly car bombing in Cairo.



Speaking at a military funeral held for prosecutor Hisham Barakat, Sisi said that authorities will amend the law to carry out "swifter justice."



"We're going to amend the law to allow us to implement justice as soon as possible," a visibly angry Sisi said.



"We won't spend five or 10 years trying the people who are killing us," he said. "We will respect the law, but we'll make it a law that confronts terrorism."



He went on to pledge to implement any sentences issued by Egyptian courts.



"We are implementing the law. If a death sentence is passed, it will be implemented. If a life sentence is issued, it will be implemented," Sisi said.



Barakat died Monday from injuries sustained when a bomb struck his motorcade as it passed through eastern Cairo.



He is the most senior Egyptian official to have been killed since the ouster of Egypt's first democratically elected President Mohamed Morsi in a military coup in 2013.



No group has claimed responsibility for the attack so far.



Since Morsi's ouster, Egyptian authorities have carried out a relentless crackdown on dissent that has mainly targeted the ousted president's supporters, leaving hundreds dead and thousands behind bars.



Scores of Muslim Brotherhood leaders and members, including Morsi, have been sentenced to death. - Kahire
