23.11.2014 16:45

A Palestinian man died on Sunday of injuries he sustained earlier in the day when an unexploded Israeli ordnance went off in the West Bank's Jordan Valley area, a senior official from Wadi al Maleh municipality said.

A Palestinian man died on Sunday of injuries he sustained earlier in the day when an unexploded Israeli ordnance went off in the West Bank's Jordan Valley area, a senior official from Wadi al-Maleh municipality said.

"Ahmed Safawta, 40, died of serious injuries he sustained from the explosion in the northern Jordan Valley's Bardala district," Arif Daraghma, the mayor of the municipality, told The Anadolu Agency.

He added that Safawta, a shepherd by profession, had breathed his last at an Israeli hospital where he had been rushed to following the blast.

Daraghma pointed out that the unexploded ordnance is believed to be linked to a recent military exercise by the Israeli army in the area.

No Israeli official was available for immediate comment on the incident.

The Israeli army routinely stages war games in the Jordan Valley, home to some 10,000 Palestinians.

Palestinians fear that Israel seeks to keep the strategic valley under its control as an economic and security buffer zone for Jewish settlements in the area as part of any future peace deal.

However, the Palestinians insist that the Jordan Valley is a key part of the future state of Palestine.
