Update - Palestinian Driver Hurts 9 Israelis İn Jerusalem

22.10.2014 20:48

Israeli police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld says there is strong possibility of ‘terror attack.’

Nine Israelis were injuredon Wednesday when a Palestinian driver ran over passengers disembarking from a light rail train in Jerusalem, Israeli police havesaid.

"Nine people were injured by a vehicle that struck people at a light railway stop in Jerusalem," police spokesman Micky Rosenfeld said.

"All injured taken to hospital. Investigation continuing," he added.

He said the driver had been shot as he tried to flee the scene.

Police closed off the area as forensic experts arrived at the scene of the incident.

Rosenfeld said there was a strong possibility that the incident constituted a "terror attack."

A number of Jewish settlers gathered in the area to protest what they called a "terror attack."

The tram line, which runs through East Jerusalem, links West Jerusalem to the Jewish-only Pitgadzev settlement.

Security was stepped up on the light rail linethis summer after a 16-year-old Palestinian boy was kidnapped and killed by Jewish settlers near East Jerusalem's Shufat tram station.

Israel occupied East Jerusalem during the 1967 Middle East War. It later annexed the holy city in 1980, claiming it as the capital of the self-proclaimed Jewish state – a move never recognized by the international community.
