Update – Supporters Of Egypt's Morsi Stage Pro-Gaza Rallies

18.07.2014 16:18

Supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi staged rallies on Friday in support of the embattled next door Gaza Strip, which continues to reel under a crippling 12 day old Israeli military offensive.

Supporters of ousted Egyptian president Mohamed Morsi staged rallies on Friday in support of the embattled next-door Gaza Strip, which continues to reel under a crippling 12-day-old Israeli military offensive.

One group of protesters, holding Palestinian and Egyptian flags, marched on a club for army officers in eastern Cairo, eyewitnesses said.

Protesters also staged marches in southern Cairo's Helwan district and in parts of the adjacent Giza province.

Demonstrations were also reported in several other parts of the country to decry Israel's ongoing offensive, which has left at least 266 Palestinians dead and more than 1970 injured since it began early last week.

Over the same period, only one Israeli has been killed as a result of rocket fire from Gaza.

Friday's demonstrations came in response to earlier calls by the National Alliance for the Defense of Legitimacy, Morsi's main support bloc, to rally in support of the besieged Gaza Strip and its roughly 1.8 million inhabitants.

Since July 7, Israeli warplanes have pounded the densely-populated strip with the ostensible aim of halting rocket fire emanating from Gaza.

On Thursday, the Israeli army stepped up its offensive, sending ground troops into the Palestinian territory.

The ongoing operation, dubbed "Operation Protective Edge," is the self-proclaimed Jewish state's third major offensive against the blockaded Gaza Strip in the last six years.

Morsi supporters continue to stage near-daily protests against the elected leader's ouster by the army last summer, amid an ongoing crackdown on dissent by Egypt's military-backed authorities.
