A suspect has been taken into custody Wednesday morning after reportedly striking a police cruiser and then attempting to run over officers who were on foot.
A Washington D.C. police spokeswoman said there was a call of shots fired at 9: 30 a.m. local time (1330GMT) on Independence Avenue, which runs along the south side of the U.S. Capitol.
There has been no confirmation that shots were fired, however, she added.
Streets near the Capitol have been closed amid a heavy police presence, but the incident appears to be under control.
U.S. Capitol Police are currently leading the investigation into the matter. A spokeswoman said the incident appears to be criminal in nature "with no nexus to terrorism".
The Capitol building remains open except for cuts to traffic on Independence Avenue. -
