US Announces Additional $378 Million İn Syria Aid

30.07.2014 23:48

The further funding brings the U.S. total assistance to the victims of the civil war to more than $2.4 billion.

The United States has announced an additional $378 million in humanitarian aid for Syria, bringing America's total assistance to the victims of the conflict to more than $2.4 billion.

"The regime is asphyxiating half a million Syrians in Aleppo by obstructing deliveries of food, water, and medicine, and dropping dozens of barrel bombs a day on the city and surrounding suburbs," Secretary of State John Kerry said in a statement on Wednesday.

"Syrians all over the country are being butchered at the hands of a ruthless tyrant."

"The world must act quickly and decisively to get life-saving assistance to the innocent civilians who are bearing the brunt of this barbaric war."

The U.S. is the single largest donor of humanitarian aid to those affected by the conflict, according to the State Department.

U.S. aid is split evenly between assistance to those within Syria and refugees living in neighboring countries.

An estimated 170,000 people have died in the crisis and it has "produced a refugee crisis throughout the entire region," according to the State Department.

Kerry insisted that the U.S. remains committed to finding a political solution to Syria's conflict, now in its fourth year.

"We must bring the violence and bloodshed to an end and work toward a future of dignity and freedom that all Syrians deserve," he said.
