The US has begun to conduct armed drone missions into Syria from an air base in Turkey and has plans to launch manned fighter jets from there, a US official has announced. The US has begun to conduct armed drone missions into Syria from an air base in Turkey and has plans to launch manned fighter jets from there, a US official has announced.

Jeff Davis, a Pentagon spokesman, said on Monday that the US has not launched air strikes from İncirlik Air Base so far but may begin conducting strikes soon. He added that the US is also likely fly search and rescue missions from the base.

İncirlik Air Base has been opened for use at the same time that the US has begun launching air strikes to defend US-backed Syrian rebels under fire from forces other than Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant (ISIL) terrorists. Davis said that for the first time, the US used strikes on Friday to defend rebels who were under attack from the al-Nusra Front, al-Qaeda's branch in Syria.

In the meantime, the US deputy special presidential envoy for the global coalition against ISIL, Brett McGurk, met with Turkish Foreign Ministry Undersecretary Feridun Sinirlioğlu over the weekend to discuss the details of the recent agreement allowing expanded access to İncirlik Air Base.

On his Twitter account on Friday, McGurk posted that he was in Ankara for meetings with Sinirlioğlu and other Turkish officials concerned with “implementing recent agreements to intensify fight against ISIL.”
