25.10.2014 00:33

At least ten people were killed on Friday by U.S. drone strikes that targeted sites belonging to an Al Qaeda linked militant group in Yemen's central Al Bayda' province, tribal sources have said.

At least ten people were killed on Friday by U.S. drone strikes that targeted sites belonging to an Al-Qaeda-linked militant group in Yemen's central Al-Bayda' province, tribal sources have said.

"Some sites belonging to the Ansar al-Sharia group were hit in the province, as the latter engages in clashes with the [Shiite] Houthi group in the town of Radaa' in Al-Bayda' province," one of the sources said.

According to the sources, ten militants were killed and a number of others wounded in the airstrikes.

"This is the first time that U.S. aircraft struck Al-Qaeda sites since the group began fighting the Houthis over the past ten days," the source said.

Al-Qaeda and the Houthis have been locking horns in Al-Bayda' for the last several days, with each seeking to tighten its grip on the flashpoint province.

The Houthis have controlled Yemeni capital Sanaa since September 21, when they signed an agreement with the Yemeni presidency aimed at ending the country's ongoing political stalemate.

Since then, the Houthis have tried to extend their control over other parts of the country as well.

Yemen has been dogged by political turmoil since a popular uprising that erupted in 2011 toppled longstanding president Ali Abdullah Saleh one year later.

Some Arab capitals accuse Shiite Iran of backing Yemen's ongoing Houthi insurgency.
